A Frozen Charlotte doll is a small, solid, unjointed porcelain or bisque toy made in Germany from about 1850 to 1920

History and Origin

Penny Dolls: During the Victorian era, these inexpensive figures were commonly sold for a penny and often referred to as "penny dolls" or "bathing babies" (because some versions could float in water).

The Name: While 19th-century makers simply called them penny dolls, the name "Frozen Charlotte" was coined by doll collectors in the 1940s. It links the solid, stiff dolls to the American folk ballad Fair Charlotte (about a vain young girl who froze to death during a winter sleigh ride).
